Assuming I counted right, here are 37 suggestions for Joakim Soria's new nickname. No offense, but a few of these are awful.
None
Well, day three of Joakim Soria’s nickname search is probably about time to collect the pieces and see what we’ve got. Glad to see you people aren’t shy about e-mailing or hollering on Twitter, and the results are, well, interesting.
Got a couple responses from folks wanting to make this sorta official, print up t-shirts and hand them out Opening Day, something like that, and maybe that can work but first we need to settle on a name.
At least a dozen of you came up with the same name, El Bombero, Spanish for firefighter, and that’s probably the best one I see but there are plenty of other options.
Please either leave the comments here on the site or directed to me on Twitter (@mellinger), and we can break this down in categories:
Spanish translations:
El Ultimo (Spanish for last one)
Whatever is Spanish for “closer of the door”
El Lanzallamas (Flamethrower)
El Bombero (suggested by many, Spanish for firefighter)
El Matador (also suggested by several)
El Ahorrador (the saver)
Beunas Noches
La Flama Azul (blue flame…not bad)
La Llama Real (real flame)
El Mariachi
El Acabador (the finisher…not bad, and suggested by several)
El Guapo (handsome…seriously?)
El Acero (steel)
La Barba (the beard)
Other references to Joakim’s nationality:
The Meximizer
MeXYZ
Mexclamation Point
Mexicali Rose
Deus Mex (I have NO idea what any of those mean)
Mexterminator (which, @mikertr points out, is only offensive if you’re a cockroach)
Mexicutey-pie (see this? My peeps have a sense of humor)
The Mexellence of Mexecution
His Mexcellency
And then the rest here, well, I’m not sure what to make of these:
Smooth
Stitch
Panama Jack
The Jack
Joakim I’m Not Soria struck you out (nice to see Chris Berman reads the blog)
The Wolf (Like the guy in Pulp Fiction)
The incredible Joak
Jack the Wiffer
The Jackal
The Savior
Jack the Ripper
Kaptain K-SO
Senor Lockdown
Jack in your Crack (this one makes me giggle)

2 years, 2 months ago“Llama Real” (it’s right after buenas noches and la flama azul)? Soria is a real llama? Well, I guess he could ride out to the pitcher’s mound on a real llama. That would be different. It would bring back memories of Charlie Finley.

2 years, 2 months agojust to say, “el guapo” has nothing to do with the literal translation. its the name of the bad guy in 3 amigos.

2 years, 2 months agoLet’s just go with Soria, that’s it. It seems to be that he was implying the great ones don’t need a nickname so how about we oblige.
