GREEN BAY, Wis. — Right at the top, let me kindly invite you to a live chat we’ll do from Lambeau Field at 4 p.m. today. I mean, unless you’d rather work. All you have to do is click here and we’ll have some fun.

Beyond that, I hope you read this morning’s column, truly one of my favorite kinds of things to do. I first heard from Lt. Col. John Lorenzen of Lansing a few months back, after the All-Star Game, and we struck up a friendly back-and-forth.

At some point, it dawned on me that John represents so much of what I love about sports. He’s been in Iraq and Afghanistan, fighting the good fight, with the lessons and passion he has from sports helping every step of the way. His plane lands in Kansas City this afternoon, and tonight he and his wife will watch one of their sons in a cross country meet.

For you or me, sports might be something to watch on the weekends or keep our minds occupied on fantasy football. For John, they are clearly more than that, and in all the best ways.

Anyway, I appreciate him and his wife Chris being willing to share their story with me. As a nice bonus, someone with the Royals read the story and is getting tickets for the Lorenzens for Saturday night.

Everybody wins.

    Wed, 22 May 2013 23:22 CDT

Belying its reputation as a pitcher's park, the math shows a trend toward the hitters at Kauffman Stadium. That ought to be good news for the home team, which has labored at the plate for much of this season. The Royals are scoring and allowing slightly fewer runs at home ... Read more »
