Three thoughts after a genuinely encouraging win by the Chiefs
The Kansas City Star
INDIANAPOLIS — A miniature debate started on Twitter about the gameday atmosphere here, some calling it a shopping mall, others saying it’s a little more respectable.
Sunday was not the Colts fans’ best day, even when Curtis Painter looked like the other Colts quarterback and the Chiefs were down 17 points in the second half. I remember this place being much louder last year when the Chiefs played here. Nothing like Seattle or Denver or Kansas City on its best days, but still solid.
Many of you disagreed, and even if these things are by definition subjective, the sentiment was strong enough that I must not be remembering it right.
Three more thoughts:
- All things considered, this was Matt Cassel’s best game with the Chiefs: 21 for 29, 257 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Statistically it’s terrific, obviously, and even if some of that was helped by Dwayne Bowe’s ridiculous plays — more on him in tomorrow’s column, including a quote that you probably won’t see anywhere else — he just never made a bad decision.
He audibled out of bad calls when he needed to, avoided pressure when he could, and — at least if my memory serves — didn’t even come close to an interception.
Anyway, I asked Matt if he thought this was his best game. Just reading between lines, I think he thinks it is, but here is what he said:
“You know, I would like to say that…I don’t know, to be completely honest. But it was a great game for myself, I felt good out there, I felt like I was in command. But again, on offense, it takes all 11 of us doing our jobs.”
All the crap surrounding Todd Haley, and his guys continue to play hard for him. That’s often easy to overlook, but I do think it’s important. If the players wanted him fired, I think we’d have seen it these last three weeks.
I’m not sure what to make of Jackie Battle, but I did pick him up on my fantasy team. Granted, I had Jamaal Charles, but the Chiefs just don’t have any better options. I wanted Dexter McCluster to be that guy, but now feel like I held on to that too long. There’s something not right with McCluster. He can’t stay upright, and even when he gets in space now, he doesn’t seem to make anybody miss.
