Don't kill the Mellinger

Kansas City Star columnist Sam Mellinger's thoughts on sports and other important stuff.

KC Star

Twitter Tuesday: Black Keys, obviously, but also shampoo, Chiefs draft, Royals lineup, Dontari Poe, sandwiches, Sporting KC, Rex Hudler, David Glass, Kate Upton and Jim Bob Cooter

The concert was ridiculous, thank you for asking. Got to go with a friend who’d never seen the greatest show on earth, and it was good to see that kid on Christmas come out, and even better to grab a cigar afterward.

I’d also like to point out that, at least this time, I can honestly swear to being Division I caliber. Because — let’s be real — there’s no way a coach could ever scream at me for not celebrating well enough.

My boss has specifically asked that I stop crawling around the newsroom and fake-peeing on Covitz’s laptop every time I drop hot fire.

Let’s get to it:

@TheJimmyHart Obviously, the Black Keys met expectations. How did Tulsa and our food stack up? #TT

Tulsa’s cool. Any city with a Marriott property within walking distance to the concert AND bars is fine with me.

Per Twitter response, we went to McNellie’s. That was the only meal I ate in Tulsa, and it was fine, but the beer list was nails and the friend of a friend who manages there gave me some good recs.

But the show, damn.

@froggiemlm #twittertuesday So have you officially became a Black Keys roadie now? I plan on seeing you in Council Bluffs.

The way I’ve started to think about it … however much you love your favorite team, that’s how much I love the Keys.

And I’m gonna be out of town when they’re in Council Bluffs, wish I could make it.

@RyanDeMar Which shampoo company is trying to sign you to an endorsement deal? #TwitterTuesday

You know I can’t discuss that quite yet.

@yourbassist I don’t think you’re an asshat, but I did want to say asshat. Do you think Crennel can motivate/coach up Poe? #twittertuesday

Noted.

That’s the whole key. Sort of like last year’s pick of Jon Baldwin — wide receiver, western PA guy — was for then-head coach Todd Haley, it’s impossible not to see this year’s pick of Poe as for now-head coach Romeo Crennel.

I’ve said this a few times already, but the more I think about this pick, the more it makes sense and Crennel is a huge part of that. Coaching defensive line is his background, his comfort zone, so if the Chiefs draft someone as naturally talented as Poe and can’t get anything out of him they’ve got much bigger problems than a bad first-round pick.

@TylerScott12 your opinion about chiefs draft class? All I’m hearing is how Dontari Poe is only player keeping team from earning positives.

I like the thought behind it, building depth, adding pieces they didn’t have. I’d have liked to have seen them get an inside linebacker at some point, but in the grand scheme that’s a small thing.

My biggest criticism of the draft…

@EdBartel Given how the draft played out, who would a floppy haired asshat have chosen if he were picking for the Chiefs at 11?

… I’d have traded down from 11, hopefully to around 14-20 or so, still felt confident I could get Poe (and pay him less) and use the extra pick(s) to hopefully find an impact guy like they did with Justin Houston last year.

@MikeVmos which KC BBQ/establishment comes up with the Poe, Powe platter for the #Chiefs? Or has a sandwich featuring such a name?

Was surprised to get a lot of Tweets like this, actually. I get that Poe is 350 pounds, but we all understand that he put up 225 pounds on the bench 44 times, right? And that he ran a 4.91 40?

This is more than a champion eater.

@kent_swanson 2013’s QB class is LOADED. Perfect year for Chiefs to draft one with a limited amount of teams needing one next year (as of now).

Is it?

I get that people are high on Matt Barkley, but the Chiefs aren’t drafting high enough to get him. Probably forget about Landry Jones, too, and if Denard Robinson is the fifth-rated quarterback in a class, I don’t know, doesn’t make me too excited.

@AtomicJayhawk Feeling really good about the draft. And upcomming Chiefs season. Can u please just skip talking about the Royals tomorrow? #TT

Not a chance. Sorry dude.

@mitchopkins Do we need to move Hosmer down in the lineup? Maybe put Moose in the 4 spot for the time being…

Just using the same players who made the Royals’ last lineup — you know, before the flood of 2012 — here’s my lineup:

LF Alex Gordon

DH Billy Butler

1B Eric Hosmer

RF Jeff Francoeur

3B Mike Moustakas

C Brayan Pena

2B Chris Getz

SS Alcides Escobar

CF Jarrod Dyson

Marinate on that. I buy into the idea that the No. 2 hitter is very under-valued by old-school baseball, and with this lineup, I guarantee the best five hitters get the most plate appearances while maintaining the left-right-left thing throughout.

@KCBossman Who will be the token Royals All-Star this year? #Sweeney5xallstar

Mike Moustakas is probably the frontrunner right now. One thing to keep in mind with Butler and if Hosmer’s numbers turn around like I expect them to, it is so hard to make the All-Star team at first base. Even with Albert Pujols sputtering, it’s a hazy mix of Adrian Gonzalez, Prince Fielder, Kendry Morales, Mark Teixeira, Carlos Pena, Paul Konerko and others.

@tyler16088 do ever think the Royals will be a playoff team while the Glasses own the team?

Unless they sell in the next few years, yeah. I understand that this sounds like b.s. at the moment, but if the Royals don’t make the playoffs inside this six-year Eric Hosmer Window, it will be a major upset. Every bit of recent baseball history says a collection of talent like this, contractually binded to stay together, makes the playoffs. It’s gonna happen.

@Heine57 when are we going to see Gio back up because if we are going to lose ten I’d rather see him up here.

His numbers are getting better, but still far from forcing a call-up, which is what he’ll have to do.

At least by my estimation, the fan Gio obsession has been waning the last few weeks — I’d like to think I’ve had a smidgen to do with that, but probably not — but it will still be both a wildly popular move and entree for more Royals jokes when Gio gets called up at some point this summer.

@KevinJW1 Is Rexy improving, or has the Royals early stench deflected our attention to, ya know, the game itself?

I think he has toned down a lot of what he was getting crushed for early, but I’m also not hearing a whole bunch of compliments for him.

His style and personality are just SO different from Frank White and what Royals fans have become accustomed to, there are going to have to be changes on each side to make this work.

@PhilGarver If you put the Juggs gun on Kate Upton, what would her fastball reach? Can she bring the heat?

Kate Upton can bring whatever the heck she wants. That’s a rule.

@TheSmokingPun #TT Does it make me entirely crazy that many of us traveled to another country to see SKC in Vancouver? My friends think so.

Here’s another rule: it’s never entirely crazy to travel to Vancouver. Your friends should know better.

Although, if you went there just for the game, like, in and out in one day…then, yeah, I’m with your friends.

@Grant4MU What are your top 3 @planetsub sandwiches? I’ll go Italian, Southwest Chicken, and Cheese Steak

Mega Roast Beef, Planet Sub, and Green Turkey (hold the sprouts), in that order. It’s tough for me to get away from the Mega, though, and honorable mention goes to the Creamy Club and Planet BBQ.

Actually, just last night I earned a free sandwich. Proud moment.

@buffblondemama all the literary names we have, and then there’s Jim Bob Cooter. #keepitfancykc

Him and Brooks Pounders both, I’m dubious about both these names.

I’m like Donald Trump here. I want to see their birth certificates.

@ksubmac should Bryce Brown being drafted count towards extending the #KState NFL-drafted players streak? #TwitterTuesday

No. Not at all. And K-State fans know that.

@mitchopkins when does it reach the point where policing a #HumbleBrag becomes a #HumbleBrag in itself?

Look here, “Mitch,” I’m providing a service to Twitter users everywhere. I’m watching, always watching, and if you #HumbleBrag you damn sure better get called out on it.

That’s my role. I embrace it.

  • Here’s an eye-opener: Data show the K is a hitter’s park

    Wed, 22 May 2013 23:22 CDT

Belying its reputation as a pitcher's park, the math shows a trend toward the hitters at Kauffman Stadium. That ought to be good news for the home team, which has labored at the plate for much of this season. The Royals are scoring and allowing slightly fewer runs at home ... Read more »
